In 2018, Bitvavo launched the first version of its digital assets trading platform, to bridge the gap between traditional currencies and digital assets. By offering transparent fees, a wide range of assets and an easy to use platform, Bitvavo is making the currency of the future accessible for everyone.

In two years' time, Bitvavo has established itself as the market leader in the Netherlands and one of the largest in Europe, with over one million users exchanging tens of billions of digital assets a year.

Our team, located in Amsterdam, is looking for self-driven, talented people who can help make digital assets available for everyone.

About the Opportunity

As our Senior Security Engineer, you will drive the engineering and operational excellence of Bitvavo’s Security Detection and Response (SDR) team. You’ll lead detection engineering, strengthen data security, enhance network and web defences, and guide the team through complex incidents — ensuring our environment remains protected, resilient, and compliant.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Detection Engineering: Design, implement, and optimise detection logic within security monitoring platforms to identify threats in real time.

  • Incident Response: Lead end-to-end response to significant security incidents, from triage to containment and lessons learned.

  • Data Security: Develop and maintain data protection policies and processes to prevent unauthorised access or exfiltration.

  • Network and Web Security: Manage and improve controls that protect network and web traffic across the organisation.

  • Security Operations Enablement: Oversee the configuration, maintenance, and optimisation of core security technologies supporting monitoring and response.

  • Automation & Integration: Streamline workflows and integrate tools to improve operational efficiency and response times.

  • Compliance & Reporting: Ensure controls align with internal policies and regulatory standards, producing meaningful reports and insights.

What We Look For

  • 8+ years in detection engineering, incident response, or cybersecurity operations roles.

  • Strong technical understanding of network, endpoint, and cloud security concepts.

  • Proven experience in detection rule development, incident handling, and data protection.

  • Familiarity with automation, scripting, or integration work (e.g., Python, PowerShell).

  • Certifications such as GCIA, GCIH, or CISSP are an advantage.

  • Excellent analytical skills, attention to detail, and ability to mentor team members.
